English Romantic Painter, 1769-1859 English painter and engraver. He was the most important animal painter of his generation. Many of his dynamic compositions depict horses, dogs or wild animals in agitated emotional states, the sense of movement being reinforced by vigorous brushwork and strong colours. With their sweeping landscapes and dramatic skies, his canvases epitomize Romanticism. American, 1888-1946 .U.S. folk painter. Pippin served in the infantry in World War I, but he was wounded in 1918 and discharged with a partially paralyzed right arm. His first large canvas was an eloquent protest against war, End of the War: Starting Home (1931 ?C 34). His primary theme became the African American experience, as seen in his series entitled Cabin in the Cotton (mid 1930s) and his paintings of episodes in the lives of the antislavery leader John Brown and Pres. French Painter , 1748--Paris 1821 Painter, son of Jean-Georges Wille. Between 1761 and 1763 he trained under Jean-Baptiste Greuze, who was a friend of his father, and later under Joseph-Marie Vien. Approved by the Acad?mie Royale in 1774, he devoted himself to painting sentimental genre scenes, such as the Last Moments of a Beloved Wife (1784; Cambrai, Mus. Mun.), in Greuze's manner. He also executed paintings for his father to engrave, including French Patriotism (1781) and the Double Reward of Merit (1785; both Bl?rancourt, Cheteau, Mus. N. Coop. Fr.-Amer.).

French Painter , Bordeaux 1745-1809 Paris was a French history painter and portraitist, draftsman and art critic, who matured his talent in the Paris ateliers of Joseph-Marie Vien (from 1764) and Nicolas Bernard L??pici?? and, having won third place in the Prix de Rome competition, 1769, spent four years, 1773-77, in Italy. At his return to Paris he set an early example of neoclassicism. His Observations sur quelques grands peintres, (Paris, Duminil-Lesueur) 1807, offered anti-academic advice somewhat at variance with his own manner
